Yasmani Grandal Courtesy: Triple-A Tucson

The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled prized catching prospect Yasmani Grandal from Triple-A Tucson. In a corresponding move, the Padres designated right-handed pitcher Jeff Suppan for assignment.

Grandal is a 23-year-old switch hitter hit .317 with 10 doubles, four home runs, 23 RBI,22 runs scored and 21 walks in 34 games for Tucson this year.

Grandal hails from Cuba and was drafted in the first round in the 2010 first-year player draft( 12th overall) out of the University of Miami. Grandal was traded to the Padres this season in a five-player deal that included the Padres netting Brad Boxberger, Edinson Volquez and Yonder Alonso in exchange for right hander Mat Latos.

Suppan, 37, went 2-3 with a 5.28 ERA over six starts for the Padres this year.

The veteran of 17 Major League seasons has a career record of  140-146 with a 4.70 ERA in 448 games, 417 starts.

With the addition of Grandal,the Padres now carry three catchers on their 25-man roster.
